The Artist In Me
Jackson Pollock
(1912-1956)
Pollock
Abstract
Expressionism

Jackson Pollock was born Paul Jackson Pollock on January 28, 1912 in Cody, Wyoming. Pollock's family moved often during his childhood. When Pollock was 18, he moved to New York to study art and dropped his first name.

Early in Pollock's career he drew landscapes but after suffering a nervous breakdown in 1938, he began creating more abstract works influenced by Miró and Picasso. Pollock had his first one-man show in 1943 and in 1944 he painted his first wall-sized art piece. In 1945, Pollock married Lee Krasner who was also an artist.

In 1947 Pollock first used the process of pouring or dripping paint onto a canvas on the floor. He would often spend weeks painting and weeks just thinking about what he was going to paint before he would finish a piece.

Pollock received much recognition and publicity for his "drip" technique that he used to create his major art works but he was often broke and he never sold a painting for more than $10,000 during his life.

Jackson Pollock died on August 11, 1956 in an automobile accident.
