Summer reading enhances the reading program in place at St. Martin's and
we hope that you encourage your children to read during summer vacation.
If your child is entering 2nd-8th Grade in the fall and they have
completed their required Summer Reading book, check out our Summer
Reading Project in the Computer Lab! This is not required
but it's a fun way to play with technology and think about what they
liked or didn't like about the book they read.
Kindergarten: It is recommended that all students entering
Kindergarten read, or have read to them, 10 age
appropriate books and to submit a reading log
the first day of school.
Children that accomplish this goal will receive a "Summer
Reading" certificate.
1st Grade: It is recommended that all students entering
1st Grade read, or have read to them, 10 age appropriate
books and to submit a reading log

2nd Grade: All
students entering 2nd Grade are required to read The Case of
the Marshmallow Monster by James Preller.
Students will be tested on this book during the first week of school and
it is recommended that they read it just before coming back so it will be
fresh in their minds. Some copies of this book are available in the school
office. Call to check on availability and/or come in to purchase it. It is also recommended that all students
entering 2nd grade read 10 additional age appropriate books and submit a reading log

4rd Grade: All students entering 4th Grade are required
to read Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by Deborah &
James Howe. Students are required to write a page describing their
favorite part of the book and also to draw a picture of it. This
should be turned in the first day of school. Students
will be tested on this book during the first week of school and it is
recommended that they read it just before coming back so it will be fresh
in their minds. Summer reading enhances the reading program already in
place at St. Martin's and we hope parents will encourage their child to
read other age-appropriate books during their vacation.
5th Grade: All students entering 5th Grade are required
to read F is for Freedom by Roni Schotter. Copies of this
book are available for purchase from the school office. Please call us to
check availability before you come in for a copy. Students will be tested on this book during the first week of school and
it is recommended that they read it just before coming back so it will be
fresh in their minds. Students should also make a poster advertising
their book and turn this in on the first day of school. The poster
should be created on an 18" x 24" sheet of paper. When designing
the poster, students should create large, detailed and colorful images,
making full use of the paper. Students should be sure to include the name
and author of the book. Students may use any type of resource when
creating their poster: crayons, markers, paint, computer graphics,
watercolor, clip art, etc. Summer reading enhances the reading program

their child to read some additional age appropriate books
