"Every child is an artist. The problem
is how to remain an artist once he grows up."
Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain. His last
name was actually Ruiz - Picasso is his mother's maiden name. His father
was an artist and art teacher. Picasso began creating complex artwork
when he was very young and was accepted to a well-known art school when
he was 14.
Picasso's paintings from 1901-1904 were somewhat sad and featured the
color blue therefore paintings he did during this time are referred to
as his "blue period". Following this, Picasso went through his
"rose period" from 1904-1906. Also during this time, Picasso
began creating sculptures and even designed costumes for the ballet.
Picasso moved permanently to Paris in 1904 and became friends with
Georges Braque. They helped to develop the Cubist style. This style
breaks items down to basic geometric shapes. As Picasso's style evolved,
not only did he use basic shapes but he would often show the same
subject from different points of view - e.g., you could see both a front
view and profile of the person in the painting.
Picasso created more than 20,000 art works in his lifetime and no
painter was more famous in his own lifetime than Picasso. Picasso had
four children. He died on April 8, 1973.
