Uniforms are required daily for all students in Middle School unless otherwise specified. Students are required to come to school in clean clothing that is in good condition. Students who come to school dressed inappropriately will not be allowed to attend class until they are dressed appropriately. The Heads of School and classroom teachers are responsible for interpreting, implementing and enforcing the dress code policy.

Shirts: Only 2 or 3-buttoned collared polo shirts with no logos, no pockets and a plain unbanded waist in light blue, navy, red, burgundy, white, yellow and dark green may be worn.

Turtlenecks: Plain white turtlenecks or turtlenecks in colors matching the polo shirt may be worn under polo shirts in cold weather.

Spirit Shirts: Spirit shirts purchased through St. Martin’s Spirit Store on the school website may be worn on the announced Spirit Day of the week.

Sweatshirts: Only St. Martin’s or CIMI sweatshirts are permitted with uniforms. These are available for purchase through the School Office. Sweatshirts may be required on special occasions. 8th graders are also allowed to wear sweatshirts purchased through the School Spirit Store on the school website.

Pants/Walking Shorts: Navy and a brownish "paper bag" khaki chino style long pants and shorts (in 100% cotton twill or a cotton and polyester blend) are allowed throughout the school year for boys and girls. Pants and shorts should not be oversized or frayed on the ends. Cropped or capri length pants, bell bottoms and cargo style pants or shorts are not allowed. Shorts may not be more than 5 inches above the knee and no longer than 1 inch below the knee. Long pants are required for boys for special occasions.

Skirts/Skorts/Jumpers: Girls may wear khaki or navy skirts and skorts (in 100% cotton twill or a cotton and polyester blend) throughout the school year. Skirts and skorts can be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee and no longer than 3 inches below the knee. A skirt or skort is highly desired for special occasions however girls may wear long navy or khaki pants in lieu of a skirt or skort on these occasions.

Bike Shorts: Navy or white bike shorts may be worn under skirts. Bike shorts should not be longer than the skirt.

Belts: Belts are encouraged on pants and shirts with belt loops and are required if polo shirts are worn tucked in. Belts may be navy, black, dark brown or khaki.

P.E. Clothing: Plain navy athletic shorts or navy shorts with white piping on sides of legs and/or bottom of shorts and a plain navy crewneck t-shirt are required for P.E class. Plain navy sweatpants may be worn during winter months on cold days. No logos or numbers are allowed on P.E. shorts, shirts or sweatpants.

Socks: Only crew or anklet socks in black, navy, white or the color of the polo shirt being worn are allowed with uniforms. Ped socks are not allowed. Girls may also wear navy or white knee socks or tights.

Jackets: Only St. Martin’s fleece jackets or flannel lined windbreakers with the school emblem are permitted with uniforms. These are available for purchase at Dennis Uniforms. A fleece vest, with the school emblem, is also available. On cold days, a heavy jacket in navy, black or red with no logos, patches or writing may be worn, as long as it is not oversized.

Shoes: Only closed-toe, rubber-soled, athletic shoes may be worn to school. Athletic shoes with heels are not acceptable. Extreme high tops are not allowed. Shoes must be tied in traditional fashion over the tongue. Shoes worn with the uniform are required to primarily be black, white, navy or a combination of black, white and/or navy in color.

  Hair: Hair should be clean and neat at all times. Extreme or faddish hair styles or hair colors are not allowed. Steps, spikes, shaved heads or shaved sides, etc. are not acceptable. Boy’s hair must not be longer than the shoulders.

Jewelry: Jewelry may be worn in moderation (one necklace, one bracelet, etc.) Body piercing and tattooing violate uniform policy. Students who wear pierced jewelry in any place besides their ear must remove that jewelry while at school or while participating in school events. Only stud earrings and small hoops are acceptable.

Cosmetics: Girls are allowed to wear moderate makeup in light colors. Heavy eyeliner, dark eye shadows and blushes are not allowed. Girls may only wear pale colored or clear lipstick. Nails must be clean and neatly trimmed. Only clear or light color nail polish is allowed.

Backpacks: Students may use any backpack of their choosing, however, backpacks on wheels are not allowed.

Hats & Scarves: Hats (including all head coverings such as bandanas and scarves) are not allowed. Scarves of any kind are not allowed.

Free Dress: Free dress is a privilege and students are expected to wear clothing that is in good taste and appropriate for school. Clothing should not be revealing, form-fitting, oversized or ripped. Free dress awards may only be used on Thursdays, unless otherwise notified. Free dress is at the discretion of the Head of School and the classroom teacher. The following items are never acceptable for free dress:

  • Cutoffs, bicycle shorts, beachwear
  • Spaghetti straps, backless or sideless dresses, halter tops, tank tops, bare midriffs
  • Extremely short skirts or shorts
  • Low-rise pants, skirts or shorts
  • Oversized shirts or pants
  • T-shirts with objectionable slogans or pictures
  • Jackets with objectionable slogans or pictures
  • Temporary tattoos

Medical Excuses: Variations from uniform requirements for medical reasons require a letter from the student’s doctor.

Where to Purchase: All uniforms must be purchased from one of the suppliers (brands) listed below.

Uniform shirts, pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, P.E. clothing and jackets may be purchased from Dennis Uniform, 20920 Victory Blvd., Woodland Hills (818) 887-5736. The School Code for St. Martin's at Dennis Uniform is SH00BF (those are zeros and not the letter O in the code).

Uniform shirts, pants, shorts, skirts, skorts and P.E. clothing may also be purchased from Lands End via their catalog (available in the school office) or their website at landsend.com/school. When shopping at Lands End be sure to specify St. Martin’s preferred school number: 900104407.

Uniform pants, shorts, skirts and skorts (French Toast brand) may also be purchased at Sears. Note: The French Toast product line includes skirts and skorts in 100% polyester and polyester/rayon blends; these are not allowed as part of the St. Martin’s uniform.

Uniform sweatshirts may be purchased from the School Office.

Spirit Shirts may be purchased from the Spirit Store on the school website.
