Middle School Catalina

Thursday, February 11th – The latest from Mrs. H:

This has been a wonderful trip. Yesterday we went on the astronomy night hike and even saw some shooting stars.  Today we went kayaking.  While we were waiting for the wind to stop blowing, we went tide pooling and saw sea anemones, crabs and many other interesting things.  We also went eel fishing and saw a huge eel and a seal.  Yesterday while we were on the pier we saw a leopard shark.  We have just come back from our campfire on the beach.  We sat around telling each other great stories and now we are all very tired.  Tomorrow morning we will have our final lab (marine animals), play some games and then leave around noon.

Wednesday, February 10th – News from Mrs. H:

All of the students attempted the Climbing Wall – some conquered their fear of heights and almost made it to the top! Way to go! This afternoon will be Fish Labs and petting sharks and fish. Tonight will be the Astronomy Hike.

Thursday will be spent kayaking, visiting the tide pools and eel fishing. We’ll be celebrating Emily’s birthday with a cake and singing and finishing off the day with a beach campfire.

Please note that there will be no update from Catalina on Friday. Everyone will be busy in the morning packing and getting ready for the boat trip home. We will receive a call at school when they have docked in Long Beach and again when they are about 30 minutes from the school.

Tuesday, February 9th – 2:40pm (Latest update from Mrs. H.):

A slight change of plan -  A light rain started to fall after lunch today (Tuesday) and therefore activities will be inside for the rest of the day.  This afternoon we will have our oceanography lab and then this evening we will play the Santa Clarita Island game.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will attempt the climbing wall in the morning and have a fish lab in the afternoon.  In the evening we will have our astronomy night hike.
Thursday we will go kayaking and tide pooling and have fun around the campfire in the evening.

Everyone loved the snorkeling and they saw a sea lion, starfish, sea urchin and garibaldi.

Monday, February 8th – Update from Mrs. H:

Everyone has had a great day!  They have been on a 2 mile hike crossing creaks and running water – it was beautiful!  Tonight they are having a “Creatures of the Night” lecture and maze where they will learn about deep sea fish.  They had spaghetti and strawberry cake for dinner and everyone is really tired.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) they will snorkel in the morning and have an oceanography lab in the afternoon where they will look at samples under a microscope.  In the evening they will have an astronomy night hike.

On Wednesday they will be kayaking and tide pooling during the day and in the evening they will be playing the Santa Clara Island game (more news on that to follow).

Dorm accommodations are very nice and their counselors are wonderful!  Everyone is well and happy!

Monday, February 8th – 6:55am:
