Summer 2010 Reading
Summer reading enhances the reading program in place at St. Martin’s and we hope that you encourage your children to read during summer vacation.
Kindergarten: It is recommended that all students entering Kindergarten read, or have read to them, a minimum of ten (10) age appropriate books. Parents are asked to keep a Summer Reading Log and turn it in to the teacher on the first day of school. Children that meet these goals will be awarded a “Summer Reading Certificate”.
1st Grade: It is recommended that all students entering 1st Grade read, or have read to them, a minimum of ten (10) age appropriate books. Parents are asked to keep a Summer Reading Log and turn it in to the teacher on the first day of school. Children that meet these goals will be awarded a “Summer Reading Certificate”.
2nd Grade: All students entering 2nd Grade are required to read Cam Jensen and the Green School Mystery by David A. Adler. Students will be tested on this book during the first week of school and it is recommended that they read it just before coming back so it will be fresh in their minds. Some copies of this book are available in the school office. Call to check on availability and/or come in to purchase it. It is also recommended that all students entering 2nd grade read ten (10) additional age appropriate books and submit a Summer Reading Log on the first day of school. 3rd Grade: All students entering 3rd Grade are required to read The Mouse and The Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary. After reading this book, students must:
- Respond to the questions found on the 3rd Grade Summer Reading Book Report Form.
- Bring the completed Summer Book Report Form to class on the first day of school.
Students will be tested on this book during the first week of school and it is recommended that they read it just before coming back so it will be fresh in their minds. Summer reading enhances the reading program already in place at St. Martin’s and we hope that parents encourage their child entering 3rd grade to read some additional age appropriate books during their vacation. Some suggestions are:

4rd Grade: All students entering 4th Grade are required to read Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Students are required to write a page describing their favorite part of the book and also to draw a picture of it. This should be turned in the first day of school. Students will be tested on this book during the first week of school and it is recommended that they read it just before coming back so it will be fresh in their minds. Summer reading enhances the reading program already in place at St. Martin’s and we hope parents will encourage their child to read other age-appropriate books during their vacation.
5th Grade: All students entering 5th Grade are required to read F is for Freedom by Roni Schotter. Some copies of this book are available for purchase from the school office. Please call us to check availability before you come in for a copy. Students will be tested on this book during the first week of school and it is recommended that they read it just before coming back so it will be fresh in their minds. Students should also make a poster advertising their book and turn this in on the first day of school. The poster should be created on an 18″ x 24″ sheet of paper. When designing the poster, students should create large, detailed and colorful images, making full use of the paper. Students should be sure to include the name and author of the book. Students may use any type of resource when creating their poster: crayons, markers, paint, computer graphics, watercolor, clip art, etc. Summer reading enhances the reading program already in place at St. Martin’s and we hope that parents will encourage their child to read some additional age appropriate books during their vacation. Students should also type a one-page summary of their book, which is due on the first day of school. It should be composed and typed in accordance with the Middle School Traditional Book Report Instructions. Please encourage your child to complete this assignment on their own with little or no assistance.

If you need to purchase books for the Summer Reading program that are not available from the school office, don’t forget you can purchase Barnes & Noble and Borders Scrip throughout the summer for your Summer Reading Program shopping or sign up and shop online from the eScrip Mall.
