Helping Children Cope in the Face of Tragedy

… weep with those who weep.
Romans 12:15

Today we at St. Martin’s weep with those who weep over the senseless loss of innocent lives in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. It is truly impossible to imagine the grief felt by those who have lost their family members and the anguish of the entire school community at Sandy Hook Elementary. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families in Connecticut who have experienced the loss of a loved one, the community at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and the village of Newton, CT.

Our prayers also go out to our own school community as we and our children struggle to deal with this tragedy. The National Association of School Psychologists has published some guidelines for helping children to cope with national disasters and tragedies. As you and your children try to cope with these events, we hope that the information found in A National Tragedy: Helping Children Cope can help you to ease any fears your children may have.
